Vivian passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 1, 2026, in Greenville, Texas, surrounded by the love and legacy of a life well lived.
Vivian Onita Justus was born on March 21, 1930, in Atoka, Oklahoma, to Juney Gwyn Justus and Mary Beatrice Moorhead Justus. She was raised near Atoka, where she attended school and built the strong values of faith, family, and perseverance that guided her throughout her life. She met Jesse Poteet in Davis, Oklahoma, and from the moment they met, Jesse knew she was the one he would marry. They were united in marriage in 1947 and shared many loving years together, raising their family first in Oklahoma and later in Irving, Texas, after moving there in 1963. In 1977, they purchased property near Lake Tawakoni, where they spent cherished weekends and dreamed of retirement together. Jesse preceded her in death on February 13, 1985.
Vivian later married Gene Hollaway on December 21, 1989. Together they made their home in Irving before settling permanently in Wills Point in 1994, near Lake Tawakoni. Gene preceded her in death on October 15, 2007.
Above all else, Vivian loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a devoted member of Wills Point International Outreach Church and lived her faith daily—not just in words, but through kindness, prayer, and selfless love. Vivian was a true example of what a Christian woman should be, trusting God wholeheartedly and believing deeply in the power of prayer. She found great joy in reading her Bible, tending her yard, and serving others, but her greatest joy came from loving her family. Her home and heart were always open, and her life was a reflection of grace, humility, and unwavering faith.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Jesse Poteet and Gene Hollaway; her children, George Poteet and Janice Poteet Sims; her grandson, James “Jimmy” Poteet; and her siblings, Delbert Justus, Ray Justus, Joyce Shaffer, Winona Dean, Kathryn Barnes, and Rose Madison Houston.
She is survived by her loving children, Johnny Poteet and wife Sonia of Wills Point, Texas; Jesse Poteet and wife Robin of Wills Point, Texas; and Eddie Poteet and wife Susie of New Providence, New Jersey; her brother, Kenneth Justus; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were deeply loved and faithfully prayed for.
Vivian’s life was a beautiful testimony of faith, love, and devotion. Her legacy lives on through the generations she nurtured, the prayers she prayed, and the example she set for all who knew her.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28–30
