Velma Ruth Brown was born on April 2, 1932, in Gunter, TX, to parents, Willard Clayton and Delores Lindsey Brown. She grew up in Grayson County. Ruth attended a one room school through the eighth grade, three years at Denison High School and then graduated from Honey Grove High School at barely seventeen years old. She moved to Dallas where she met Dan Asbill at church. They were married on October 28, 1950, and celebrated sixty years of marriage while raising their four children. Ruth worked for the City of Dallas and then for the City of Mesquite where she and Dan lived for forty years. She was also a classroom teacher’s aide. Dan and Ruth moved to Edgewood in 1995, and became members of First Baptist Church. Ruth was also a visitation assistant for Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home for many years. She taught Sunday school at the church for twenty plus years to Senior Adult Ladies until recently. Ruth said it was God’s hand that He could take a shy country girl and use her for a teacher of His word even though she was not a bible scholar.
She is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters; her husband, Dan and son, Dan, Jr.
Ruth is survived by her son, Clay Asbill of Winnsboro, TX; two daughters, Donna Asbill Hoover and husband, Ronny of Edgewood, TX, and Patti Asbill of Wills Point, TX; grandchildren, Amy, Ashley, Jake, Josh, Buck, Calley, Colt and wife Meggie, Jessy and Cassidy; six great grandchildren.
