Suzanne “Suzy” Birdwell, 70, of Wills Point, TX, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
Suzanne Elise Birdwell was born on April 16, 1955, in Dallas, to Eugene Fields Birdwell and Helen Earl Curtis Birdwell. She was raised in Campbell, CA, where she attended elementary schools and graduated from Campbell High School in 1973. Suzanne studied business at California Polytechnic San Luis Obispo, receiving her bachelor’s degree in 1977.
Suzy began her human resources career in the heart of Silicon Valley. She worked for several tech companies which, as they grew larger through mergers, took her around the U.S., first to Maryland. While working in the greater D.C. area for a government contractor, she earned her Master’s of Science in Business from Johns Hopkins University, and eventually returned to California to become Director of Human Resources for a small medical device company. When it was acquired by St. Jude Medical in St. Paul, Minnesota, she moved to the Twin Cities to become its Vice President of Human Resources. Suzy retired from St. Jude in 2015, and moved to Wills Point, where she built the home of her dreams in the community where her mother’s family has lived for generations.
Away from work Suzy enjoyed playing bridge, and upon moving home to Texas was an enthusiastic member of the Canton Bridge Club, serving as its President in 2024-25. As a faithful Methodist, she joined Russell Memorial Methodist Church as soon as she moved to Wills Point, and she served (and chaired) several committees throughout her time there.
Suzy started travelling when she was in high school when she took a six-week study tour of Europe after her graduation. She returned to Europe several times over the years, but also took trips around the United States, taking in natural beauty of our national parks, as well as learning more about the history of our nation through visiting battlegrounds and presidential libraries. Suzy adored her cats and was an avid reader. Above all, she cherished time spent with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Helen Birdwell, and her brother, David Eugene Birdwell.
Suzy is survived by her niece, Heidi Birdwell and her children – Kassandra, Kaylee, Landon, and Lexi; nephew, Erik Birdwell and his wife Hazel and their children Rex, Bella, and Max; and many beloved cousins: Sue Davis, Stefani Curtis, Damon and Jana Davis, Amber and Jon Hester, Ragan and Keri Davis and their children—Brendan Batten (wife Hayley) and Bailey Davis; Molly and Aaron Case and their daughter, Katie Case; Connie Curtis; and Ben and Rachel Curtis and their children—Birdie, Dodson, Emerson, and Goldie Curtis. She is also survived by her dear friends of nearly 60 years: Donna Perry (San Jose), Kris Schmidt (Washington State), and Ann Sewill (Los Angeles).
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM, Friday, July 25, 2025, at Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Wills Point. Graveside service is schedule for 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 26, 2025, at White Rose Cemetery.
