Sue Whitmire Starnes Obituary


Sue Ann Whitmire Starnes was received into the loving arms of Jesus and her faith became sight on Thursday, August 1, 2024.  (Hebrews 11:1)

Sue was born and raised in El Paso, Texas.  In 1949 at age 16, her family relocated to Edgewood, Texas.  After completing high school in Edgewood in 1952, she attended Texas Women’s University and the University of North Texas both in Denton, Texas and later attended the University of Texas at Tyler.

She worked as an administrative professional at Employers Casualty Company and Mobil Oil Corporation both in Dallas, Texas, and Henderson County Memorial Hospital in Athens, Texas.  In 1972 she began her professional career as a Social Worker and Supervisor for the Texas Department of Health and Human Services in their Canton, Austin and Tyler offices retiring in 1996.

She was preceded in death by her parents Richard Erwin Whitmire and Naomi Ruth Boswell Whitmire; step-mother Marjorie Thompson Whitmire; brother COL. Richard Erwin Whitmire, Jr. USA (Ret.); sister Marjorie Whitmire Tarver; and nephew Donte D’Agostino III.

She is survived by children David W. Starnes (Peggy), Beaumont, Texas; John E. Starnes (Karla), Plano, Texas; Amy Starnes Winn (Scott), McKinney, Texas; grandchildren Canaan Starnes, Denver, Colorado ; Eden Starnes Kirk (Ford), Dallas, Texas; Jordan Starnes, Austin, Texas; Jacob Starnes, Addison, Texas; and Justin Starnes, Plano, Texas.; Nieces Nancy Tarver Tahaney, Temple, Texas; Mary Tarver Wilson (Chris), Sunrise Beach, Texas; Barbara J Whitmire Henderson (Vaughan), Seguin, Texas; nephews Keith Whitmire, Dallas, Texas; John Whitmire (Kristina), Ft. Myers, Florida .


Sue was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton, Texas and later of Green Acres Baptist Church of Tyler, Texas.  Her favorite pastimes included spending time with her many friends from the former social club Touch Of Class in Tyler, Texas, her Sunday School class, and many long time friends from Canton, Texas.  She also enjoyed traveling, dancing and fashion.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 17,2024 at 2:00 PM in Cheatham Memorial Methodist Church, 205 S Houton St, Edgewood, Texas.
