Funeral services for Stewart Lowell Cates, 81, of Edgewood, TX, will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Wills Point with Pastor Mike Roberson officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Stewart passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2026, into the arms of Jesus at his home in Edgewood, Texas. He was born on November 5, 1944, in Lubbock, TX, to A.L. and Ila Cates.
He was a proud graduate of the Class of 1963 from Edgewood High School. In 1965, he married Grace Ann Williams, forming a union that lasted more than 60 years. Stewart proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, bravely serving during the Vietnam War.
After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to college at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University–Commerce), where he earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees.
Stewart dedicated 35 years to education. During those years, he faithfully served Edgewood High School in many roles. He was the long-term statistician for the Bulldogs, announced their games, and used his artistic talents to draw the traditional Edgewood Bulldog on the football field, in the gymnasium, and in other places throughout E.I.S.D. He was truly a Bulldog fan his entire life.
Stewart often said his greatest accomplishment was his two sons, Mark and Paul. He was always there for them and was their biggest fan! That same love carried over to his grandchildren, whom he proudly supported in all their endeavors.
Stewart was a born-again Christian and an ordained deacon who served his church in many roles for as long as his health permitted.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A.L. and Ila Cates; his in-laws, Cliff and Thelma Williams; and brothers-in-law, Clifford and Danny Williams.
Stewart is survived by his loving wife, Grace Cates; his sons, Mark Cates and Paul Cates and daughter-in-law, Summer; and the lights of his life, his grandchildren, Cooper, Gracie, and Trinity.
He is also survived by his sister, Kay Strickland and husband Jack, and his brother, Pat Cates and wife Susan.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM, Monday, March 9, 2026, at Hiett's LyBrand Funeral Home in Wills Point.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, TX 75701.
