Michael Mote Obituary

Michael Wayne Mote, of Terrell, Texas passed away after a brief illness on March 4, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 26, 1948 to parents, Grover J. Speake and Betty Jo Hudson, while they were stationed at Camp Carson, United States Army, in Colorado Springs, CO. After returning to Texas, Mike’s mother, Betty, married, Frank Otis Mote, Jr. Frank was all too happy to become the adoptive father to Mike and younger sister, Pat.

Mike spent his early years in Pritchett, TX, outside of Gilmer, and graduated from Union Grove High School in 1968. Mike met the love of his life, Glenda Kay Platter (Katy) in October 1969. Mike and Katy married in June of 1970 shortly before Mike began serving his country in the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force, Mike specialized in communications/cable splicing.

Upon Mike’s discharge from the service in 1974, Mike and Katy moved to Garland TX and began their family with the birth of their son, Sam. Mike never lost his desire to serve and did so in several capacities with a move to Mexia, TX. Mike served as a firefighter for two years before becoming a member of the Mexia Police Department. While living in Mexia, Mike and Katy’s second son, Frank, was born in 1977. In 1979, Mike was hired by the Balch Springs Police Department, but his tenure would be short as he would be hired to serve his state in becoming a Texas State Trooper in January 1980. Mike served the state of Texas until an injury sustained while serving his country in the Air Force compelled an early retirement from the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1986.

After leaving law enforcement, Mike enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. In 2010, Mike and Katy moved to a small farm in Terrell, TX where he enjoyed tinkering outside, gardening, and even making candles that he enjoyed sharing with others. He was a force to be reckoned with in dominos and loved shooting the bull with his many friends at the American Legion and Amvets.

Left to cherish Mike’s memory are his loving wife of almost 53 years, Katy; his son, Sam and wife, Jana;

brothers: Pete, Austin, Lynn, Rodney, and Grant; sisters: Marcella, and Sue; grandchildren: Dustin and Byron; and great-grandchildren: Haven, Frank, Kamden, and Dawson; and mother-in-law, Fern McNutt.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Frank, and Betty Mote; daughter, Stephanie, and son, Frank “Trey”; sisters, Pat, and Mary; grandparents, Alford and Lena Hudson; and father-in-law, James Platter.

Family and friends who wish to give a memorial donation in lieu of flowers may send their gift to any Disabled American Veterans Charity.
