A gathering of family and friends to honor the life of Louis “Sonny” Hammonds, 73, will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Wills Point, Texas.
Sonny was born on June 2, 1951, to the late Louis M. Hammonds and Marjorie Lee Ritchey Hammonds. He was raised in Ennis, Texas, where he attended high school. Sonny proudly served his country in the United States Army.
In June 1972, he married Mary Morgan, who preceded him in death in 2007. Together, they lived in several places, but primarily called Athens and Wills Point home. Sonny worked as an electrician for the Dallas Times Herald, Lighthouse for the Blind, and Tyler Pipe. He was of the Baptist faith and was known for enjoying time spent on the front porch with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Mary Morgan Hammonds; daughter, Stacy Hammonds; brothers, Lesley Hammonds and Roy Hammonds; brothers-in-law, Bo Mesker and James Harrod; and nephews, Randy Hammonds and Darrell Wayne Bellamy.
Sonny is survived by his daughters, Sarah Jo Donaldson and Julie McNeel, both of Larue, and Carrie Pedersen and her husband Ray of Gun Barrel. He is also survived by his sons, Rodney Hammonds and Norman Hammonds, both of Larue; his brother, Wesley Hammonds and wife Belinda; and his sisters, Virginia Bellamy and husband Wayne of Dallas, Karen Chism and husband Junior of Forney, Bertha Mesker of Wills Point, and Deborah Harrod of Larue. Sonny leaves behind twelve grandchildren: Cody McInroe, Nicole Horton, Carrie Gamble, Brannon Hollaway, Tevin Hall, Keely McKinney, Audrey Riethman, Gabe Hammonds, Luke Hammonds, Tuesday Hammonds, Brooklyn Steffen, and Hannah Pedersen, as well as fifteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
