Private funeral services for Leland Irvin Harris, 93, of Canton, TX, are scheduled for 11:00 AM, Friday, August 28, 2020, at Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Wills Point. Burial will follow at Haven of Memories Memorial Park in Canton.
Leland passed away Sunday, August 23, 2020, in Mesquite.
Leland Irvin Harris was born on August 2, 1927, in Clay Center, NE, to parents, Clarence Neil Harris and Louise Cornelia Sumner Harris. He was raised in the Lindsburg and Topeka, KS area. After high school Leland enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served from 1945-1948, on the ship U.S.S. Quick Destroyer. He was also a World War II Victory Medal recipient. Leland moved to Dallas in 1961, and worked at Baylor Hospital in maintenance while attending electrical school. Leland married Ruby M. Bednar on March 8, 1973, in Mesquite. They lived in Garland before moving to Rowlett and Palestine and eventually made their home in Canton in 2002. Leland was a supervisor for Westinghouse in the Southland Corp. building. He was also employed by National Elevator before retiring in 1992. Leland was a member of the New Beginning Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Louise Harris; children, Betty Lou Butler and Terry Harris, Lillie Cranfield, Robert Thompson; siblings, Clarence Ivan, Melvin Francis, Floyd Neil, Rebecca Jean and Zelma Vernetta.
Leland is survived by his wife, Ruby Harris; daughter, Sondra Zito; step-children, Jodie Dominick and Peggy Smith; siblings, Darwin Harris and wife, Lou, Janice Sachs and husband, Steve and Carolyn Lynn and husband, Tom; twenty-one grandchildren, forty-one great grandchildren, thirty-two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM, Thursday, August 27, 2020, at Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home.
