Kay Calloway Mitchell passed away in Dallas, Texas on January 2, 2023 at age 84 after complications from a stroke.
Born in Wills Point, Texas on March 14, 1938, Kay met the love of her life during high school, Benny Charles Mitchell. They were married for 61 years. She graduated from Southern Methodist University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She enjoyed several years teaching second grade - testament to her genuine, nurturing and caring nature.
An avid bridge player, Kay was passionate about mastering the game and spending time with her friends. She learned to play as a teenager and played every Tuesday throughout her life. She was loved by all, and regularly kept up with many lifelong friends of the family in Wills Point.
She also loved the outdoors, and one of her favorite places was the family ranch, Mitchell Mountain in Sonora, Texas. Photographing wild animals, taking care of the land and sharing it with her family and friends brought her happiness.
Throughout her life, there was nothing more important to Kay, than family. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother; and one of her biggest pleasures was preparing weekly Sunday lunch. She was a talented cook, and we will always remember for her brisket, sticky rice and fried turkey - as well as Mimi milkshakes for the grandkids. She cherished a full house. In her later years, receiving photographs and text message updates from her grandkids was her biggest joy.
She is preceded in death by her brother Robert William (Bill) Calloway and her parents Homer Harold Calloway and Geneva Long Calloway.
Kay is survived by her loving husband Benny Mitchell of Wills Point, Texas. Also surviving her are her four children, Mitzi Cassidy and husband Clif of Dallas, Maston Mitchell and wife Amy, Harold Mitchell, all of Wills Point and Chad Mitchell of Anna; eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren; sister, Gay Calloway Preston; sister-in-law, Pat Thurman Mitchell; and many other relatives and friends.
