Karen passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at her home in Houston.
Karen was, above all, a kind and generous soul—always ready with a smile and a laugh as open as her heart. Her greatest joy was time with family: cheering us on through the hard moments, offering a shoulder when we needed one, and always finding reasons to celebrate us. Those who knew her are better for it. There is no greater legacy.
Karen Marie Shoptaw was born on August 5, 1948, in Dallas, Texas, to Joseph Lee Shoptaw and Aletha Webb Shoptaw. She was raised in Dallas, where she attended Stonewall Jackson Elementary and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School before earning a bachelor’s degree at Texas Christian University.
Karen pursued a career in teaching, first in the Houston public school system. Following three years in Fort Worth, she moved to Wills Point in 1977, where she dedicated over 20 years to teaching middle school English for Wills Point Independent School District. She later earned her master’s degree in education from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University–Commerce).
In addition to teaching generations of children, Karen was a longtime member of Russell Memorial Methodist Church, where she found great joy in teaching Vacation Bible School and supporting her children’s church youth activities. After retiring from Wills Point ISD in 2004, she remained in Wills Point for several years before moving to McKinney. In 2009, Karen relocated to the Greater Houston area, where she made her home until her passing.
Karen is predeceased by her parents and sister, Cynthia. She is survived by her four sons, their father Richard Davis, and their families: Brian Davis-Shcherbakov and his spouse Artem Shcherbakov; Steven Davis, his spouse Allison Archambault, and their children Thea and Roey; Scott and Amanda Davis and their children Collin, Brooke, and Annabelle; and Craig and Chancie Davis and their children Finley, Sloane, and Ames.
