John Albert Kenyon, more fondly known as Dad, Granddaddy, and Pop to those who loved him, passed away peacefully and entered Heaven in the early morning hours on May 2, 2025, in Bonham, Texas, at the age of 78. John was born to William Albert Kenyon and Sarah Louise Hart Kenyon on September 25, 1946, in Lawton, Oklahoma. John was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force and served his country with honor from April of 1964 to October of 1969 achieving the rank of Sargeant. During his service, he served in Vietnam and Taiwan. He was preceded in death by his wife DeLois Elaine Kenyon (Dee) of Edgewood, Texas, whom he was married to for 29 years before her death in 2005. He later married Janice Kenyon, an Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native, in Branson, Missouri, on July 12, 2014. Janice, along with John’s son Mark Kenyon (and wife Alyssa) were at his side when he passed while battling Parkinson’s disease and dementia.
John is survived by his wife, Janice, of McKinney, Texas; daughter, Amy Kenyon Tipton of Lavon, Texas; and her children Marley Tipton, Berkley Tipton, Hadley Tipton; son Mark Joseph Kenyon and wife, Alyssa, of Sachse, Texas; and sister Susan McCann and husband, Harold, of Lawton, Oklahoma. Many played a special role in John’s life including his many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, stepchildren Ryan Rhodes and wife, Jana, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Kyle Rhodes and wife Jeni, of McKinney, Texas; and Robin Foelsch and husband Mike of McKinney, Texas; and grandchildren, Aidan Rhodes, Avary Rhodes, Ashton Rhodes, Keelie Rhodes, Sydney Foelsch, and Emily Foelsch.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William Albert Kenyon and Sara Louise Hart Kenyon, of Lawton, Oklahoma; his sister Sandra Louise Dempsey of Canton, Texas; and his wife DeLois Elaine Kenyon of Edgewood, Texas.
John spent many years working at the United States Postal Service until his retirement. He and his late wife, Dee, also owned a restaurant in Edgewood, Texas, known as The Wild Flour Cafe. During his retirement, he worked as a Maintenance Supervisor at Country Lane Retirement Home. John loved the Beatles, reading, and was always ready to crack a joke.
In addition to his love for his family and his Savior, Jesus Christ, John was also a member of the American Legion and volunteered at the Good News Club where he found joy in teaching children about Christ. John delighted in creating leatherwork pieces, going country-western dancing with his wife Janice, and spending time with friends at the McKinney Recreational Center. John was a faithful servant to his Lord and loved to share his testimony of when he submitted his life to Christ. While living in McKinney, Texas, John attended Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas.
The family would like to thank the medical team at Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home for their compassionate care for the last 2 ½ years. They went above and beyond to treat John like family and become his “home away from home.”
The family will welcome visitors at Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Wills Point, TX on Friday May 30th at 2:00 PM. A graveside service will be held immediately following at 3:00 PM at Oak Hill Cemetery in Edgewood, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Parkinson’s Foundation in his memory.
