Jaqueline “Jackie” Bernice (Shofner) Flanagan of Van, Texas, passed into eternal glory on the 8th of March 2026, after 94 years of love and service to God, friends, and family.

Jackie was born on August 10, 1931, at home at 1527 Avenue C in Beaumont, Texas, to Louie B. “Jack” Shofner and Mary Elizabeth Neeson. As her father worked in a variety of jobs, including for Sears Roebuck & Company, the family moved often within Texas and Oklahoma. Jackie demonstrated her intelligence early, skipping two grades and graduating from St. Benedict’s Catholic High School in Shawnee, Oklahoma at age 16. Jackie attended Texas State College for Women (now Texas Women’s University) in Denton, Texas, on a music scholarship. She sang and played the piano, organ, guitar, and violin. She married Finis Gray Flanagan on June 10, 1951, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Terrell, Texas. After marrying, Finis served in the United States Air Force, and he and Jackie settled in Wills Point, Texas, to raise their three children.

Jackie had many talents and displayed them in a variety of jobs, including working at the family-owned Flanagan’s Supermarket in Wills Point, where she could often be found behind the meat counter. She operated the Tiger Den restaurant in Wills Point, which served as a safe social gathering spot for young people. She taught school at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Baytown, Texas, and was a radio DJ in Woodville.

She was always active in her Catholic faith. Among her many roles in the Church, she was the choir director at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Beaumont and Director of Musical Liturgy at St. John’s in Terrell. She often played the organ and led the choir at these churches as well as at Our Lady of the Pines in Woodville, Texas. She said the rosary every evening and traveled to Lourdes, France, with her sister.

Jackie was smart, funny, and enjoyed her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a great seamstress, an accomplished musician, an excellent cook, and an avid reader. She had a personality that was larger than life and never met a stranger.

Jackie is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Elizabeth Shofner, her husband of 65 years, Finis Flanagan, her daughter, Susan Elizabeth (Micki) Green, and her sister, Frances Ann “Ann” (Shofner) Sallee.

She is survived by her brothers Robert L. “Bob” Shofner and wife Joyce, Thomas L. “Butch” Shofner; children, Missy Lewis and husband Gene, Michael Flanagan and wife Jan; grandchildren Brian Scott and wife LeeAnn, Jamie Coffelt and husband Walter, Stacy York and husband Casey, Michelle Cagle and husband Robert, and Peyton Lewis, together with numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
