Funeral services for Gwendolyn Rae Taylor Darr Powell, 91, of Kingston, OK, are scheduled for 2:00 PM, Friday, April 7, 2023, at Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Edgewood. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Gwen passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023, in Kingston, OK.
Gwendolyn Rae Taylor was born on August 26, 1931, in Wichita Falls, TX, to parents Reginald Virgil Taylor and Iva Evelyn Galey Taylor. She was raised in Edgewood where she attended Edgewood High School and was involved in cheerleading and softball. Gwen graduated from high school in 1948. Gwen married Billy Joe Darr in 1948, and he preceded her in death. She was employed by General Dynamics doing secretarial work for many years before eventually retiring from Esco Elevators. Gwen later married Rev. Paschal Hayden Powell. She was a preacher’s wife for sixteen years before Paschal passed away in 1996. Gwen was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed gathering with her church women’s group. Through the WMU, Gwen served in fellowship ministering God’s word, assembling care baskets and helping those unable to attend services and worship. The WMU also worked to raise money for the Baptist Home for Girls in Oklahoma. She was gifted with her hands and loved sewing, gardening and playing piano.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Evelyn Taylor; first husband, Billy Joe Darr; second husband, Paschal Powell; sisters, Norma (June) McCormack, Barbara (Janet) Thurston and Sonia (Gail) Bouis; great grandson, Daniel Joseph Cummings; great-great grandson, Carson James Sanchez Cummings; niece, Tracie Thurston Staton.
Gwen is survived by her daughters, Brenda Darr and partner Sherilyn Stratton of Nacogdoches, TX, Cynthia Pinson of Kingston, OK, and Katherine Walker and husband Jim of Riodoso, NM; son-in-law, Ross Pinson; grandchildren, Aimee Walker and Veronica Pinson and partner Wes Stanley; great grandchildren, Timothy Cummings and partner Olivia Sanchez, Slade Pope and Ethan Pope; great-great grandchildren, Zaelynn Cummings, Aviana Cummings, Daxton Cummings and Millie Cummings; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM, Thursday, April 6, 2023, at Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Edgewood.
