Alice Talley Sparks passed away peacefully on Monday, May 26, 2025, in Rockwall, Texas.
Alice was born on January 31, 1945, in Los Angeles, California, to Lemuel H. Talley, Jr. and Pauline K. Johnson Talley. From a young age, Alice had a keen eye for design and order. She began her education at 92nd Street Elementary School and went on to attend Edison Junior High and Fremont High School in Los Angeles. Her passion for organization and the domestic arts led her to study home economics at Compton Junior College.
After college, Alice followed her sister, Ruby’s footsteps and applied for a position at Pacific Telephone Co. She was quickly hired as a long-distance operator in Huntington Park, CA. Known for her buoyant personality and cheerful attitude, Alice was soon promoted to the personnel department, where a mentor recognized her potential and encouraged her to aim even higher. She took that advice to heart and joined Trans World Airlines (TWA), becoming the oldest woman hired as a stewardess at the time. Alice loved her work and enjoyed traveling, especially between New York and Pennsylvania. Eventually, she returned to the telephone company, where she continued her dedicated service until her retirement in 1993.
Alice met the love of her life, Nathaniel Sparks, in 1966. They married in June of 1970 and were blessed with a son, Alan Sparks. For decades, Alice and Nate lived in Harbor City, CA, before relocating to Texas in 2006. There, they purchased land and built their home from the ground up—a true labor of love and commitment.
In addition to caring for Nate’s parents in their later years, Alice became an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Lonnie Cunigan. While Nate served as a church trustee, Alice joined the kitchen staff and found joy in working alongside her dear sister-in-Christ, Julie, preparing meals and organizing beautiful events for the church. Alice’s creativity, warmth, and generosity were also shared through her involvement in the church’s youth scholarship program—one of her greatest passions.
Alice is remembered by her husband, Nathaniel Sparks; her son, Alan Sparks (Jarmine); her sister, Ruby Dantzler; Corey Dantzler; her brother, Michael Talley (Sheila); and her nephews, Justin, Brandin Dantzler, and Matthew Talley.
