Funeral services for Thurlan Smith, 79, of Edgewood, are scheduled for 10:00am, Thursday, December 24, 2009, at Goodwill Church of God in Goodwill, LA. Visitation will be at Cox Funeral Home in Lake Providence on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, 6:00-8:00pm. Local arrangements are under the direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Edgewood.

Thurlan T. Smith was born July 30, 1930, in Holland, Arkansas to the late Dermott and Myrtle Smith. He lived in Holland until the age of thirteen, when his family moved to Lake Providence, LA. Thurlan served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On February 6, 1954, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, he married Lonnie Mae Smith. They made their home in Lake Providence where Thurlan worked as an electrician. He especially enjoyed working off shore. He and Lonnie Mae have made their home in Edgewood for the past year. While living in Edgewood, Thurlan attended Edgewood Church of Christ. He loved his family as well as everyone he met. He was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed working in the yard.

Along with his parents, Thurlan is also preceded in death by brothers, O.D. Smith, E.E. Smith, Dewlon Smith and Cobern Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Lonnie Mae Smith of Edgewood; son, Mark Smith and wife, Stacie of Edgewood; daughter, Karen Nash and husband, Jerry of Mansfield, LA; brothers, U.H. Smith and wife, Peggy of Cut Off, LA, Bill Smith and wife, Mary Lee of Pine Bluff, AR and J’van Smith and wife, Inez of Lake Providence, LA; sisters, Cloreda Eakin of Boliver, MO, Carolyn Bridges of Lake Providence, LA, Faye Hill of Oak Grove, LA, Geretta Guyton and husband, Robert of Bossier City, LA and Marilyn Sparks and husband, Albert of Tallulah, LA; grandchildren, Trey Guenard and wife, Alisha of Benton, AR, Lance Guenard of Mansfield, LA, Chris Nash and wife, Kim of Collierville, TN, Jason Nash and wife, Amber of Stonewall, LA and Jerad Nash of Keatchie, LA; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Tanner, Austin, Bryant and Scarlett.
